May 11th, 2012 | Daniel Blom: A Balance of the Opposites

Seems like Daniel Blom has been especially hard at work recently, churning out projects like a well-oiled machine. Though his traditional aesthetic remains pristine and crisp, his work covers a wide range. On one hand, his continuing work with Burn Energy Drink pulses with energy from Rune Glifberg‘s stunts on fire, literally (or actually, visually). And on the other, his new landscape series entitled “Northern Psyche” is quiet and subtle, communicating the influence of light on locations and lives. Daniel uses big masks with cut outs and multiple exposures to juxtapose geometric shapes with the snowy backdrops, creating pictures that, though more tranquil, still pack on those thousand words. Daniel Blom balances the opposites, and does it well, standing at the crux of Nouvelle Vague’s tenet.

April 13th, 2012 | HELLAWOOD in Hollywood

Space 15 Twenty welcomed Hellawood, a surf-inspired pop-up shop and art show, on April 6th! The NV crew found the gallery right at home, tucked away in the laid-back niche, where shops like Urban Outfitters, Free People, and Hennessy + Ingalls make their home. A collaborative effort between Foam Magazine and Urban Outfitters, the show featured artwork by photographers including Kassia Meador, Danny Fuller, Alex Kopps, Tin Ojeda, Travis Reynolds among several other talented artists. The launch party had a great turn out, with custom surfboards being auctioned, a free-flowing open bar, and surf apparel by Insight, Art Park, Tallow and more. Outside and a few steps away, the smell of Umami burgers almost seduces us in, if not for the live performance in the adjoining courtyard by JJAMZ. Were you there at the opening event? Send us pictures! Haven’t seen the gallery yet? Come swing by. More info available here.

April 3rd, 2012 | Kassia Meador x Bruce Muller: Echo

Kassia Meador collaborated with surfer-filmmaker Bruce Muller and LA-based musical trio ESP to produce a short: “Echo.” First of four teasers, Echo precedes an experimental documentary entitled “Frequencies,” which will be released this fall. Now featured on the Nowness, the glittering seascapes combined with the mesmerizing, almost haunting audio track paint us a unique and deeply intimate portrait of the relationship between the surfer and the wave. Kassia expresses the idea into words: “There are so many different frequencies all around us at all times: ocean waves, sound waves, light waves, infrared and many others outside our range, but all have an effect on us.” Experience it here.
